Greetings Soul on Ice fans! I'm back with another episode of the Soul On Ice Radio Show. As you know, February is Black History Month in my corner of the Earth. I'll be doing a couple of mixes to celebrate BHM and this show will feature the first. If you weren't from Detroit, a deep hip-hop head or a serious modern Black music nerd, you didn't recognize the importance of James Yancey until after his passing.

If you were lucky, you knew he was the producer behind a pretty good rap album (Fantastic Vol 2) but most likely you just thought of him as some upstart rapper who everyone in your clique claimed should just stick to making beats. None of us saw him as the leader of a musical movement.

Then he went away and the discography list started came out and we all started realizing that this man know as Jay Dee was actually on his way to becoming the Teddy Riley of this hip-hop generation. That was before Lupus robbed him of that destiny. He was actually an originator, a creator of a new sound. A sound that most heads shunned at first but eventually gave in to and embraced as being the future sound of hip-hop.

I know why you all wear white tees bearing his image. Why you get your Rick Ross from Limewire but cop your Donuts from Play De Record. It's because we all realize that we didn't show this kat enough love while he was still walking amongst us. We discussed Timbo, Blaze, Skateboard P and Storch ad nauseum and never even gave a thought to throwing Dilla's name in the hat. We were wrong and we've been trying to redeem ourselves ever since. My mix is just another step on my journey to redemption. R.I.P. Dilla.
