Soul On Ice Radio Show playlist for the week of Feb 15th, 2009

Hey SOI followers! Thanks for stopping by to check out another episode of the show. I'm continuing my Black History Month celebration this week with a special Bob Marley tribute mix. We folk of West Indian heritage never have that much expected of us and worldwide notice of our accomplishments is usually fleeting at best. The names Brian Lara, Hasley Crawford, Dwight Yorke, The Mighty Shadow and Penny Commissiong may not be household names to you but where I'm from, they are living cultural icons who are recognized by all. The world not taking notice of our heroes is something we Windies have come to expect. So much so that when one of us receives Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards, Album of the Century awards from Time Magazine and Inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we celebrate that person and their legacy. . .forever. And please do not think it is because we did not expect greatness from ourselves. My people know what we are capable of and what it is that we have both accomplished and survived during our time on this rock. We celebrate openly because so often OTHERS fail to recognize/remember our capacity for greatness. . .and what kind of planetary neighbours would we be if we didn't give them a gentle reminder at least once a year?

Rest In Peace Robert Nesta Marley. Thank you for making the world stand up and take notice of the power and beauty of Caribbean music. With all respect to Uptown, Badboy, Bluenote, Chess, Def Jam and Stax, I pay respect to the most influential label ever in the history of Black music. How influential you say? Well, I don't even have to state their name and you all already know who I'm talking about! Take care of yourselves until then.

Soul On Ice Radio Show for the week of February 1st, 2009

Greetings Soul on Ice fans! I'm back with another episode of the Soul On Ice Radio Show. As you know, February is Black History Month in my corner of the Earth. I'll be doing a couple of mixes to celebrate BHM and this show will feature the first. If you weren't from Detroit, a deep hip-hop head or a serious modern Black music nerd, you didn't recognize the importance of James Yancey until after his passing.

If you were lucky, you knew he was the producer behind a pretty good rap album (Fantastic Vol 2) but most likely you just thought of him as some upstart rapper who everyone in your clique claimed should just stick to making beats. None of us saw him as the leader of a musical movement.

Then he went away and the discography list started came out and we all started realizing that this man know as Jay Dee was actually on his way to becoming the Teddy Riley of this hip-hop generation. That was before Lupus robbed him of that destiny. He was actually an originator, a creator of a new sound. A sound that most heads shunned at first but eventually gave in to and embraced as being the future sound of hip-hop.

I know why you all wear white tees bearing his image. Why you get your Rick Ross from Limewire but cop your Donuts from Play De Record. It's because we all realize that we didn't show this kat enough love while he was still walking amongst us. We discussed Timbo, Blaze, Skateboard P and Storch ad nauseum and never even gave a thought to throwing Dilla's name in the hat. We were wrong and we've been trying to redeem ourselves ever since. My mix is just another step on my journey to redemption. R.I.P. Dilla.

Very soon Barack Obama will soon be the president of the United States and it is a time of relief and optimism for many of us. I'm celebrating this moment in a couple of ways. Of course, there will be "The Black President" party this Friday in Toronto featuring Philly's own Rich Medina. As well, since we are all looking towards the future right now, I decided to shed light on a cat who I feel will play a big part in the future of Canadian Black music, Slackah The Beatchild. He's a talented, humble young man who you can learn about in the Northern Lights segment of this week's show. I'll end the show with some positive vibrations in honour of these positive times. Since you're a Soul On Ice Radio Show fan, "it" just might be the live recording of my set at the Main Ingredient party last December here in Toronto. That I should be so lucky! Listen for it in the second hour of this podcast.

An extra special shout to my Canadian fans who just finished enjoying the long Thanksgiving weekend. All of you soul music lovers get two bonuses in this week's episode. First off, I was under the weather this past week. Part of it all was having to deal with a very sore throat which kept me off of the mic. You all know what that means? Less talk, more music! Hahaha! As well, I knew I promised a special mix for you all celebrating the SoulTracks Award show recently held in Detroit. While that isn't the second bonus, this is: a special mix celebrating The Main Ingredient, a soulful Black music party that goes down in Toronto on the regular. Make sure to stop by if you're ever in the city.

That's a lot of music right there huh? Let's get into it:

Sy Smith - Drop That (remix)
Omar - Sing (remix)
L'Aroye f Humphrey - Be The One
4 Hero - Look Inside
L'Aroya f Aina - Izittobe

Don't get used to all of this music in one show now. My throat should be better by next week <smile>. Two random thoughts: If the Maxwell tour is passing through your city GO AND SEE IT!!! I can't get the bassline for Robin Thicke's "Side Step" out of my head. Who came up with that thing? Bernard Edwards?

That's it. Catch you all next week. I hope to have the Detroit SoulTracks mix ready by then.

Don't get used to all of this music in one show now. My throat should be better by next week .

It's your boy Mr. Sax! I was off the scene for a bit but I'm back. I did a couple of radio shows that I won't post here but I will start you off with two mixes I've done in the past couple of months.

The first is a promo mix for a party that Soul On Ice and Shaman Fam threw in Toronto back in July 2008. You all know about the MOJO parties in Toronto by now right? Well, here's the promo mix with myself on the wheels and Shaman Fam's WanLuv on the mic. Enjoy!

Soul on Ice Radio Show for the week of Feb 17th

Yes, yes, y'all! What's going on people? DJ Sean Sax here with the latest episode of the Soul on Ice Radio Show. Well, truth be told, not really. My arthritis was giving me a hard time for a couple of weeks. Not only was I unable to do my radio show for this past week, I couldn't even set up the podcast for the show from the week before. Well, I'm feeling a lot better so let's start getting things back on track shall we? Here's the playlist:

Cooley's Hotbox - Don't Be Afraid
Chrisette Michelle - Be OK
Lisa Shaw - Let It Ride [CAN]
Deesha - Everytime [CAN]
Luther Vandross - Shine
Up Hygh f Stefan Segolsson - It's Over
Owusu & Hannibal - Blue Jay
Slakah The Beatchild - Share [CAN]
IRS - TRACKS Lament [CAN]
Platinum Pied Pipers - I Got You
J Davey - Hi's & Lows
Jill Scott - Whatever (Live in Paris)
Raphael Saadiq & D'Angelo - Be Here (Live)

Black History Month Segment

Thelonius Monk - Pea Eye
John Lee Hooker - I Believe I'll Go
Miles Davis - Seven Steps to Heaven
Lightnin' Hopkins - Katie
John Coltrane - Cattin'
Luther Vandross - Stop To Love
Anita Baker - Sweet Love
Isaac Hayes - Walk on By
Sly and The Family Stone - You Caught Me Smiling Again
Teddy Pendergrass - Close The Door

The playlist pretty much explains itself so I won't get into too much. I don't think I'd touched on the Blues in any of my Black History Month segments during February so I made sure to pay homage in this one. As usual, if the playlist sparks your interest, feel free to download/stream the show and enjoy. Catch you all next week. Soul on Ice Baby!

Sorry for the late post of this episode of the show. Your boy Sean Sax has a birthday coming up and his body decided to remind of just how old he really is. Hahaha! An aching back slowed me down but, nevertheless, I've got the goods for my people:

Prince - I Would Die 4 U
Earth Wind and Fire - Star

New Edition - It If Isn't Love
Guy - Groove Me
Soul II Soul - Keep on Movin'
Jodeci - Come and Talk To Me
Mary J Blige - You Gotta Believe
Zapp Band - I Can Make You Dance

As you can see, I started off the show with a nod to some of my favourite Grammy nominees of 2008. I repped for my Canadian peeps before ending this off with this show's Black History Month segment.

Sorry about the delay on the Dilla mix as well. Let's just say that hunching over turntables is not the most favoured position of my spine these days. I'll get back to you all with it soon enough. Enjoy this show in the meantime. Soul on Ice Baby!

Basically it was supposed to be out this past summer. I thought about scrapping it because the music was a bit out of date. Then I realized that this ain't some commercial radio station! I'm here to provide you with GOOD music and GOOD music has no expiry date! This one is a mix of soulful house, broken beat and nu-jazz stylees. Big up to Wanluv from Shaman Fam for hosting. Look out for the next MOJO party here in T-Dot. We're just waiting for the snow to clear then we'll hit y'all with the goodness :-)

Between the tribute and Black History Month selections, I didn't get a lot of Canadian content in this week. As usual, I will try to make up for it next show. I also apologise for the tardiness regarding the new MOJO mix that was supposed to be up AGES ago (Wan is gonna' KILL me!). It's been a very cold/ dark/ snowy/ windy/ depressing/icy period of winter here in Toronto for the past couple of days and it's put me in a decidedly unproductive/ sleepy mood :-) I will get that MOJO mix up in the next couple of days. As a bonus for my lateness, I will do a lil' J Dilla tribute mix as compensation for making y'all wait ;-)
