Hey SOI followers! Thanks for stopping by to check out another episode of the show. I'm continuing my Black History Month celebration this week with a special Bob Marley tribute mix. We folk of West Indian heritage never have that much expected of us and worldwide notice of our accomplishments is usually fleeting at best. The names Brian Lara, Hasley Crawford, Dwight Yorke, The Mighty Shadow and Penny Commissiong may not be household names to you but where I'm from, they are living cultural icons who are recognized by all. The world not taking notice of our heroes is something we Windies have come to expect. So much so that when one of us receives Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards, Album of the Century awards from Time Magazine and Inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we celebrate that person and their legacy. . .forever. And please do not think it is because we did not expect greatness from ourselves. My people know what we are capable of and what it is that we have both accomplished and survived during our time on this rock. We celebrate openly because so often OTHERS fail to recognize/remember our capacity for greatness. . .and what kind of planetary neighbours would we be if we didn't give them a gentle reminder at least once a year?

Rest In Peace Robert Nesta Marley. Thank you for making the world stand up and take notice of the power and beauty of Caribbean music. With all respect to Uptown, Badboy, Bluenote, Chess, Def Jam and Stax, I pay respect to the most influential label ever in the history of Black music. How influential you say? Well, I don't even have to state their name and you all already know who I'm talking about! Take care of yourselves until then.

Greetings Soul on Ice fans! I'm back with another episode of the Soul On Ice Radio Show. As you know, February is Black History Month in my corner of the Earth. I'll be doing a couple of mixes to celebrate BHM and this show will feature the first. If you weren't from Detroit, a deep hip-hop head or a serious modern Black music nerd, you didn't recognize the importance of James Yancey until after his passing.

If you were lucky, you knew he was the producer behind a pretty good rap album (Fantastic Vol 2) but most likely you just thought of him as some upstart rapper who everyone in your clique claimed should just stick to making beats. None of us saw him as the leader of a musical movement.

Then he went away and the discography list started came out and we all started realizing that this man know as Jay Dee was actually on his way to becoming the Teddy Riley of this hip-hop generation. That was before Lupus robbed him of that destiny. He was actually an originator, a creator of a new sound. A sound that most heads shunned at first but eventually gave in to and embraced as being the future sound of hip-hop.

I know why you all wear white tees bearing his image. Why you get your Rick Ross from Limewire but cop your Donuts from Play De Record. It's because we all realize that we didn't show this kat enough love while he was still walking amongst us. We discussed Timbo, Blaze, Skateboard P and Storch ad nauseum and never even gave a thought to throwing Dilla's name in the hat. We were wrong and we've been trying to redeem ourselves ever since. My mix is just another step on my journey to redemption. R.I.P. Dilla.

It's almost here! Very soon Barack Obama will soon be the president of the United States and it is a time of relief and optimism for many of us. I'm celebrating this moment in a couple of ways. Of course, there will be "The Black President" party this Friday in Toronto featuring Philly's own Rich Medina. As well, since we are all looking towards the future right now, I decided to shed light on a cat who I feel will play a big part in the future of Canadian Black music, Slackah The Beatchild. He's a talented, humble young man who you can learn about in the Northern Lights segment of this week's show. I'll end the show with some positive vibrations in honour of these positive times. Here's the playlist:

Happy New Year! All the best from DJ Sean Sax to you and yours! I hope your NYE was an eventful but safe one. Big changes will be taking place in the world this year. Anyone looking towards the Middle East might say they've already begun. Through it all, the music will be there to put it's official stamp on the timeline of our memories so that we never forget when "it" took place. What is it? Well, "it" depends on who you are really. Since you're a Soul On Ice Radio Show fan, "it" just might be the live recording of my set at the Main Ingredient party last December here in Toronto. That I should be so lucky! Listen for it in the second hour of this podcast.
